French Santons exchanged for Juniper Joes

An amazing exchange a Santon! They are clay figurines that depict the colourful people, traditional trades, activities and costumes of Provence, France. The name santon comes from the Provincial word “santoun” for little saint. In 1789 at the time of the French Revolution the churches were closed, depriving crèche makers of their market. Jean-Louis Lagnel who made moulded figurines for the church crèches decided to make santons for the general population at an affordable price, they were an instant success.
