Hunting the Kiwi

Great day exploring the Plain with Prudence Maltby, trying to track down the New Zealand Kiwi. When WW1 was finally over New Zealand troops were waiting on Salisbury Plain for repatriation. With little to do in the aftermath of the conflict they soon found ways to get into mischief. In order to keep them busy and help the time pass more quickly it was decided that they should be tasked with adding a giant New Zealand Kiwi to the chalk landscape. The Kiwi remains there to this day as a reminder of their presense on the Plain and their contribution to the Great War.

After a steep climb up Beacon Hill, Prudence and I came across the Kiwi, still as visible as ever on the hillside (only really appreciated from an aerial view). Covered with Juniper bushes, this strange landscape rises to a point on Beacon Hill providing an amazing view over the vast expanse of Salisbury Plain - Susan Francis
